Cologne, August 12th, 2022 - For the Carglass Cologne Triathlon on September 4th, there will be enough water to swim in the Rhine despite the falling water level.
After a test swim by the organizer together with the German Life Saving Society (DLRG) district of Cologne last Wednesday at a water level of 1.09 meters, the conclusion was that the Rhine from the start in Deutz harbor (middle and Olympic distance) to to get out in the Rheinpark is deep enough to be able to swim.
Even if the water level continues to fall, there will still be sufficient water in the Rhine fairway and the minimum depth of one meter specified by the association, since the water level results from the current level of 0.91 meters plus 1.11 meters of fairway depth. The swimmers currently have 2.02 meters of water under their wetsuit.
For the event, the eastern half of the fairway will be closed to shipping by the Rhine Waterways and Shipping Authority. The swimmers are accompanied on the route by the DLRG Cologne and the water protection police (WSP) Wache Cologne with numerous boats and surfboards and monitored from the shore.
