Triathlon-Wettkampfregeln: Laufen

The regulations for the final discipline are kept short - what can you do wrong when running? Nevertheless, there are some important specifications that are often "forgotten" in practice.

The following explanations are a summary of the most important provisions of the sports location regulations of the German Triathlon Union (SpO der DTU) in the current version.

The most important regulations for running

  • Clothing: at least a triathlon one-piece suit or trousers + top (running completely bare-chested is not permitted)
  • Start number forward
  • Bike helmets may not be taken on the running course ( note : when changing, the helmet is sometimes unintentionally "forgotten" on the head in the rush and you start running with your helmet on. So make sure you take off your helmet too)
  • no sticks or similar aids are permitted
  • Shoes:
    • Spikes are prohibited
    • NEW in 2023 : the world triathlon federation adopts the rules of the world athletics federation regarding the regulations for running shoes. In concrete terms, this means that the sole thickness of running shoes is now limited to a maximum of 40mm and that custom-made prototypes are no longer permitted. The main issue here is the limitation of carbon running shoes : the thicker the sole structure, the greater the energy recovery that results from the interaction between the carbon plate and the foam sole. Gustav Iden wore such a prototype (a further development of the On Cloudboom Echo) for his Hawaii victory in 2022, which had a sole thickness of more than 40mm and with which he completed the final marathon in 2:36:15. Compliant at the time of the competition, but no longer allowed in 2023. Recreational athletes and age groupers don't have to worry - the commercially available models usually already meet these requirements anyway.
