Der Strava-Report 2022

"Whatever isn't on Strava is deemed not to have been made." This saying has become a well-known idiom among endurance athletes. Strava is the largest social platform for sports activities with over 100 million users and over 7 billion uploaded activities since it was founded in 2012. The current annual report summarizes the user statistics and shows trends in the sports behavior of the active people. Here are some of the most interesting statistics.

Number of marathon runners doubled

In 2022, the proportion of runners completing a marathon has nearly doubled compared to 2021, showing that runners are still keen to lace up their shoes and walk to the starting line together in the pandemic era after years of social distancing. In some countries, the increase was even more significant: in the Netherlands, the percentage of those who ran a marathon increased threefold!

Activities outside the home country at pre-corona level

International travel is almost back to pre-pandemic levels, with the proportion of athletes uploading activities outside their home country up 101% year-on-year - just 3% down from before the pandemic in 2019.

Biggest growth in trail activities

More and more people are active on unpaved roads and paths: 52% of athletes uploaded trail activities in 2022. The value has thus tripled within three years. This trend is fueled by the new trends in cycling (gravel and e-mountain bikes), but the number of trail and ultra runs has also risen sharply.

Great Britain leads in the "Century Rides"
