The largest amateur triathlon in the heart of Hamburg

The 20th edition of the HAMBURG WASSER World Triathlon will take place in 2022 on the weekend of July 9th and 10th. In addition to the elite, several thousand amateur athletes will again compete in 2022 over the sprint distance (750m swim, 20km bike ride, 5km run) or the Olympic distance (1.5km swim, 40km bike ride, 10km run).

“With the successful staging of the races last year, the city of Hamburg signaled that triathlons of this magnitude are once again possible in the city centre. We are now looking forward to this year's race with confidence and look forward to great triathlon sport, many thousands of athletes, and the unique atmosphere in the city center that makes the triathlon in Hamburg so special," says Christin Ellefsen, Race Director of the HAMBURG WASSER World Triathlon .

The start of "The World's Biggest Tri" takes place in the heart of Hamburg on Jungfernstieg. You swim in the Alster, framed by some of the most impressive buildings the city has to offer - a unique opportunity and extraordinary atmosphere. The bike course leads in three laps (sprint distance two laps) along the Elbe past numerous sights such as the Speicherstadt, Landungsbrücken, Reeperbahn and Fischmarkt. Finally, the running route leads the participants along the banks of the Alster with great views over the Outer Alster, and rewards them with an unforgettable finish in front of the magnificent town hall.

In 2021 Laura Lindemann and Tim Hellwig triumphed in the individual races ; the season was also able to prevail. A total of twelve squad athletes from the German Triathlon Union will go into the water on Saturday, including the defending champion Laura Lindemann: “Starting the race as the defending champion is both pressure and motivation. I had a perfect race last year, did well
the water and ended up with good legs. But there are many big names at the start, so it won't be an easy race. But walking the last few meters on Poststrasse here in Hamburg is a very special moment with the audience.”

Tim Hellwig, also defending champion, but recently with a bit of a training deficit due to a fall at the WTCS race in Leeds, was able to give the all-clear regarding his performance: “After Leeds, I wasn't able to swim so well because my wrist was sprained. Now everything is fine again and I was able to train. I've been calmer lately, but I hope that more will be possible again." A prediction is also not possible for the men, only for the relay on Sunday is clear: "We want to be back in the front with the relay, no matter who starts. "

There is good news for all triathlon fans: the women's elite race will be broadcast live on ARD on Saturday, the men's race on Saturday and the mixed team relay event on Sunday can be followed in the live stream on ard.de.
